  • Colored gravel – coated with aquarium-safe dyes. Available in vibrant shades such as red, blue, or black, allowing for customized designs. It’s crucial to ensure the color doesn’t dissolve into the water.
  • Quartz gravel – made from pure quartz, valued for its hardness and inertness. It does not affect water parameters and is safe for most aquarium species.

These microorganisms break down organic waste, converting toxic ammonia into safer forms like nitrite and nitrate. Without gravel or similar substrates, maintaining stable biological filtration would be much harder, especially in larger tanks.

Secondly, aquarium gravel stabilizes the habitat. Fish that instinctively dig or seek food at the bottom use the substrate as part of their natural behavior. Many species, such as loaches, corydoras, or certain cichlids, feel more secure when the bottom is not bare. Gravel provides hiding spots for detritus, which—when properly managed—can serve as a micro-food source for small aquatic creatures.

Thirdly, the substrate affects water parameters. While inert gravel does not change pH or hardness, specific types, like aragonite or crushed coral, slowly dissolve, enriching the water with minerals. For planted aquariums (so-called aquascapes), a fine-grained substrate is ideal. Grain size between 1–3 mm helps anchor plant roots and supports nutrient circulation. Specialized plant substrates often come as gravel mixed with fertilizing agents, but inert quartz gravel can also be used, supplemented by root tabs or liquid fertilizers.

For cichlid aquariums, especially African cichlids, gravel must increase hardness and pH. Therefore, substrates like crushed coral, aragonite, or specialized mineral gravels work best. Their grain size is usually medium to large—around 3–6 mm—which is comfortable for these robust fish species.

In community tanks with mixed species, neutral quartz gravel with rounded edges is recommended. It’s safe for both bottom-dwelling fish and plants. The color can be adjusted to personal taste, but many aquarists prefer dark gravel, which highlights the colors of the fish.

For shrimp tanks, special care is required. It’s best to use fine, inert gravel that does not alter water parameters. Shrimp are sensitive to sudden chemical changes, so substrates like akadama or neutral sand are common choices, although aquarium gravel with a verified composition is also acceptable.

Lastly, in aquariums for goldfish, gravel with grains too small should be avoided, as fish can ingest it while feeding. Choose larger, rounded pebbles, preventing choking or blockages in the digestive system.

Maintaining aquarium gravel in optimal condition is crucial for ensuring the health of fish and plants. Over time, food remnants, fish waste, and other organic matter accumulate in the substrate. Without regular cleaning, this can lead to toxic ammonia and nitrite buildup.

One basic method of maintaining cleanliness is using a gravel vacuum during water changes. This tool allows for simultaneous suctioning of debris and removal of part of the water. Properly conducted vacuuming involves gently inserting the siphon into the gravel, allowing detritus and light particles to be removed while leaving the heavier substrate intact.

Cleaning frequency depends on tank size, fish stocking level, and the type of gravel used. In densely populated aquariums, cleaning every week or two is recommended. In heavily planted tanks, where plants absorb much of the waste products, maintenance may be required less often—once a month, for instance.

Additionally, it’s important to watch out for signs like excessive algae growth, cloudiness, or unpleasant odors, which can indicate the need for a substrate cleaning session. It’s also good practice to periodically stir the gravel gently to prevent anaerobic zones where harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide can accumulate. For deep gravel layers (over 5–7 cm), this is especially important.

However, one must balance cleaning with preserving beneficial bacteria colonies. Excessively thorough cleaning, including rinsing all gravel in tap water, can disturb the nitrogen cycle. If gravel needs rinsing outside the tank—for example, during a complete aquarium renovation—it should be done using old tank water, not fresh tap water, to preserve as much bacterial flora as possible.

Gravel is used not only as a base for plants but also as a decorative element that highlights shapes, colors, and textures. Through skillful use of different colors and grain sizes, aquarists create visual depth, suggest movement, or separate different zones in the tank.

Popular design techniques using gravel include:

  • Path creation – arranging lighter-colored gravel in a meandering line resembling a stream or path, which gives the illusion of perspective.
  • Zoning – using contrasting gravel colors to divide the aquarium into thematic sections, for example, plant zones versus open space for fish.
  • Depth effects – applying finer, darker gravel in the foreground and larger, lighter stones in the background enhances the sense of space.

Many aquascapers also create gradual transitions between grain sizes, forming natural-looking gradients. Special attention is paid to harmonizing the gravel with rocks (hardscape) and plants. The substrate’s color should complement, not overwhelm, the main decorative elements. In minimalist styles such as Iwagumi, gravel often plays a leading role alongside stones and fish.

It’s also important that the aesthetic value does not compromise functionality. Too sharp-edged decorative gravel should not be used if it could harm fish.
